It is now official. You can make withdrawals from your PayPal account and have the money directly deposited into your M-Pesa account. Yes! This is the kind of news that is music to anyone who transacts online and mostly through PayPal.
I remember when I started off writing three years ago, I made my first few dollars on iWriter and the first payment was deposited to PayPal on a fine Wednesday morning. I had no idea how I would get the money to me but thanks to some research (and Google); I finally got the cash via Paysap.
When I logged into my PayPal account juzi to see if a client I had worked for had kept her promise, I was welcomed by a notification that I could now link my M-Pesa and PayPal accounts. I was happy and without wasting time (and of course after double-checking just to ensure the url was still secure), I followed the prompts to link my M-Pesa account to PayPal. It’s a pretty much quick step that does not take much of your time.
Withdrawing Money from PayPal to Your M-Pesa Account
You will receive prompts to verify that you are indeed the one making the requests. One via email, the other on your Safaricom line. After linking, you will be welcomed to the Paypal mpesa page
Once here, you can choose to either deposit funds to your PayPal from M-Pesa or withdraw from PayPal to M-Pesa. In my case, I wanted to withdraw. So I hit the ‘Withdraw from PayPal’ button.
The window that comes up displays the amount available in your PayPal account, then below there is a provision for you to key in the amount of money you would like to withdraw. The amount is in dollars.
After keying in the amount you want, let’s say $100, hit the’ Continue to Withdraw’ button.
The window that opens provides an opportunity for you to verify the amount in dollars. It also displays the amount that will be sent to your M-Pesa account as per the current rates. If the details are correct, then you can click the confirm button. If you would like to make some changes, the ‘Go back’ button is right next.
Clicking the ‘Confirm’ button leads you to the final page and you instantly get an sms on your Safaricom line. You will also get an email from PayPal on your official PayPal email address.
Within two hours, your money will be in your M-Pesa account.
Topping up your PayPal account from M-Pesa
Depositing money into your PayPal account from M-Pesa has also been made stress-free. Here is how to go about it:
Just like when withdrawing, log on to M-pesa PayPal website and select the ‘top up funds’ option. Key in the amount of money you want to deposit in US dollars. Click on the ‘calculate’ button to be able to see the exact amount in Kenya shillings. You will be able to see the current exchange rate as well. Once you have the figure in Kenya shillings proceed to do the following:
- Go to M-pesa menu on your phone
- Select the ‘Lipa Na M-pesa’ option
- Select ‘Paybill’ option
- Enter business number; 800088
- Use your phone number as the account number
- Enter the amount in Ksh (the amount you got after the calculation)
Key in your M-pesa pin and click send
